Medics at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have expressed concerns about the number of reported health conditions that can be linked to oral sex.
Gynaecologist Obstetrician with the KATH, Dr Kwadwo Sarbeng indicates that the hospital is recording cases of gonorrhoea of the throat, herpes and warts in the mouths and faces of men who practice oral sex.
Divulging the concern on the Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, Dr Sarbeng warned “oral sex is not something we recommend as part of our practice…. the reason being that it carries a lot of bacteria from the mouth to the genital area and from the genital to the mouth.”
“In fact gonorrhoea of the throat is something that we see and treat at the hospital. They present with sore throat and when we look you will realize the whole place is very sore. You can also have herpes locally known as “enwiaahono” because there are women who have herpes in their genital area.”
“And then you also have HPV, the human papiloma virus that causes cervical cancer and warts which can grow like a flower. In fact you can find warts on somebody’s face; watts on somebody’s mouth and the warts are very prevalent. And it is because of oral sex.”
Dr Sarbeng strongly warned men to desist from giving the excuse of engaging in the act with clean partners as according to him the bacteria are not readily visible to the naked eye.
