Kenya on Friday pledged to allocate additional resources towards programs that can hasten achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Safina Kwekwe Tsungu, Principal Secretary of Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender said at a forum in Nairobi that the UN 2030 goals remain a priority because they will also help the country achieve gender parity in all socio-economic spheres.

“We do not have much time left and therefore will require the mobilization of resources from the public and private sector to ensure we achieve all the 17 goals,” Tsungu said during a conference on consensus-building towards a common women agenda.

The one-day forum sought to consolidate the different voices of women towards a common agenda aimed at defining, establishing and defending equal political, economic and social rights as well as equal opportunities for women in Kenya.

Tsungu said that since 2015, when the world leaders agreed on the SDGs, Kenya has registered mixed results in attaining the 169 targets that are the core of the 2030 agenda.

“In the area of education we have almost achieved gender parity but we are lagging behind in the area of ensuring women are fully represented in the political sphere,” said Tsungu.

The official said she was optimistic that Kenya will achieve the SDGs due to the political will already in place. “All that is now required is to ensure we implement all the pledges we have made to achieve the global goals,” said Tsungu. Enditem
