Northeastern Regional Coordinator Mohamud Saleh on Monday said a contingent of security officers had been mobilized to track down the militants who ambushed a military convoy on Sunday at Elwak and Mandera.
Saleh said Al-Shabaab militants had been moving in small groups of between 10 and 15 along the border plotting ambushes.
“These militants are disguising themselves as herders like in the Sunday incident. We are appealing to residents to report such suspicious characters to security agents,” Saleh said.
The porous border has made it easy for the militants to retreat to their bases in Somalia.
They have been targeting military and police vehicles either by ambushes or planting explosives on the roads, killing a number of security personnel.
Soldiers from Kenya, under the Africa Union Peacekeeping Mission (AMISOM) operations, are fighting Al-Shabaab in southern Somalia, retaking areas previously controlled by the militants. Enditem
