Kenya on Tuesday called on regional researchers to establish an east African regional science, technology and innovation (STI) policy.

Time has come for regional researchers to develop an STI policy to help create wealth and be able to compete effectively with other regions as one block, said Principal Secretary for University Education and Research Micheni Ntiba noted that

“The development of one regional policy will help create a healthy competition in STI as well as create enterprises and employment opportunities,” Ntiba told the sixth National Stakeholders’ Consultation Workshop of East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) in Nairobi.

He said regional countries will be capable of competing effectively at the continental and international market if they introduce simple and unique products, adding that innovators need to identify key research priority areas that can develop products as well as make a difference in the region.

“There is need to exploit the available opportunities in science, technology and innovation within their respective countries to help change economies at rural areas,” Ntiba said.

The workshop drew participants from universities, research institutions, government ministries, private sector and non-governmental organizations.

It aims at addressing priority areas of the East African Community (EAC) regional STI policy, providing a proposal for an EAC innovation system and a national innovation system framework for EAC member states, as well as establishing STI pillars for the region. Enditem
