The accused, Wedo Idi Zuberi, who appeared before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Odenyo, was also found guilty of preparing to commit a felony and resisting arrest.

“The court is convinced that the accused was in possession of the explosives without permission from the authority, with intention of committing murder. And hereby sentenced him to serve jail term,” Odenyo said.

Zuberi was arrested within Mombasa in 2013 by detectives from the anti-terrorism police unit who were acting on intelligence information. Police had accused him of being member of the Al-Shabaab terror group.

According to police, Zuberi was among hundreds of Kenyan youth recruited by slain terror suspect Sheikh Aboud Rogo and had travelled to Somalia where they had undergone military training.

Meanwhile, Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa said the government has managed to defeat the Al-Shabaab terror cells operating in the coastal region.

“We have managed to thwart several terrorists’ attacks and apprehended key leaders. We will not relent on war against terror by ensuring both locals and foreigners are safe,”Marwa told Xinhua in Mombasa.

The government has launched a major crackdown to flush out Al-Shabaab from the vast Boni forest used as training ground in the coastal region. Enditem
