Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday mourned 11 paramilitary police officers killed on Saturday when the vehicle they were traveling in ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) near the common border with Somalia.
Kenyatta in a statement issued in Nairobi vowed that the east African nation will never succumb to al-Shabab’s attacks.
“The president sends his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families of the departed officers and assures them of government support during this difficult period of mourning,” according to the statement.
The slain police officers from the Harahare General Service Unit (GSU) camp lost their lives at Degow on the road between Liboi and Damajale close to the Kenya-Somalia border as they were conducting a routine security patrol.
The police believe that the militant group still remains the major threat in areas along the common border, noting that the targets include security personnel and establishments along the border as well as commuter vehicles along the border and coastal regions. Enditem
