King demands cows from poor
Swazi King Mswati III, Africa’s last absolute monarch, has ordered his impoverished subjects to give him cows for his birthday celebrations.
Chiefs from the Shiselweni region, where the celebrations will be held, will have to canvas their subjects for cattle to be slaughtered for the king, who turns 44 on April 19, Home Affairs Minister Prince Gcokoma said yesterday. Gcokoma said the chiefs were aware of the role they were expected to play as they hosted the king on his birthday.
He said the government did not have enough in its budget to pay for the event but had pledged to contribute towards the R5-million that the celebrations would cost . Mswati has a personal fortune of more than $100-million.
