The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is to set up a Local Economic Development Technical Committee to address the bottlenecks that hinder business growth.

The Committee would undertake activities to strengthen the cooperation with bodies such as the Association of Ghana Industries and Ghana Enterprises Agency to harness opportunities available to the growing small and medium-scale enterprises.

Mr Samuel Pyne, the City Mayor, who announced this at the first ordinary meeting of the third session of the Eight Assembly, in Kumasi, said the Committee’s work would include capacity development, not only for the business community but for the KMA.

The agenda is to create an enabling environment for business development and subsequently employment generation all aimed at decreasing poverty and bringing prosperity to the people.

The KMA, as part of its local economic development plan, also intends to create a platform where the business community, academia and the Assembly could interact.

The Mayor said the forum would lead to dispassionate deliberations on areas such as technological advances in business methods, investment opportunities, improving information flow and market forecast.

“This is an opportunity to develop knowledge, which is a critical building block to tackling global competitiveness and harnessing opportunities such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiative,” he said.

He said that a biennial local economic development forum would be organised to ascertain the challenges of businesses.

The expectation is that the forum would also develop a comprehensive strategic plan to address the identified problems.

The mayor acknowledged the crucial role the private sector played in providing jobs to most of the citizens, saying, the authorities would encourage the development of strategic interventions to enhance the growth of the sector.

The meeting took stock of the KMA’s development agenda and charted the path toward sustainable growth through the implementation of various socio-economic projects and programmes.
