Kofi Boakye justifies Kwaw Kesse’s arrest

Ashanti Regional Police?Commander DCOP Nathan?Kofi Boakye has said the arrest?and ongoing prosecution of?hip-life artiste Kwaw Kesse,?also known as ?Abodam?, for?smoking a substance suspected?to be marijuana was not motivated?by malice or ill motive.

wpid-kwaw-kesse.jpgThe regional police commander?said Kwaw Kesse was?not arrested solely for the substance?he was smoking but also?because of the way he was puffing
the roll with utter impunity?in a public place and near a?police barrier for that matter.

?Nobody went to Kwaw?Kesse?s room to smell his?mouth and search him to arrest?him. He was smoking openly??20 metres from a police barrier?
and if the police had not?arrested him, what do you?think would have happened to?the confidence and trust that?the people have for [the]
police?look at the act of?impunity. It is not what you do?but how you do it in the world;?it is not where you are but who?you are. It?s not a matter as?simple as using drug but it is?the act of impunity, the act of?carelessness [and] the act of?lawlessness,? DCOP Kofi?Boakye explained on Joy FM?s?Super Morning Show on Thursday.

He continued: ?How can?you go out to a pub, in front of?the pub and sit down and start?smoking? Even in Holland?[and] Washington where it is
legalised, you dare not smoke?outside; you have to go to the?coffee shop.

Even where it is?legalised, even public smoking?of cigarette is prohibited, how?much more [Ghana]??The Regional Police Commander also expressed misgivings about the style adopted by some friends and fans of the arrested hip-life musician, who have formed a so-called ?#FreeKwawKesse? movement and campaigning for his release.

?Why should people say?that they are going to form??Free Kwaw Kesse? group? Is he?a political prisoner? That was a?grievous mistake and it will not
inure to the benefit of the?accused. Why him but not the?others; is it because he is a?musician?? Kofi Boakye added?and said the law cannot be?tweaked to favour anyone.

Kwaw Kesse was arrested?on Saturday, November 22 in?Kumasi after law enforcement?agents caught him smoking the?suspected substance.

He was arrested by the?police in Kumasi about three?weeks ago and the courts have?denied him bail with an explanation?that narcotics offences
are non-bailable.

He will reappear in court on?Monday, December 22.
