It is “woefully disheartening” for former President John Mahama to denigrate the success of candidates in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has decried.

Mr Mahama had recently said the 2023 WASSCE results, considered among the best in almost a decade, were an outcome of connivance, collusion, cheating and lax supervision.

Mr Nkrumah, however, told journalists at Akim Anyinase that: “It is disheartening to observe how former President Mahama will go to all lengths to belittle the Free SHS programme and its results simply because it didn’t emanate from him”.

The Ofoase Ayirebi MP said Mr Mahama’s claims were “shocking and disappointing”.

“While he may not like the entire SHS programme, he shouldn’t try so hard to denigrate the beneficiaries. Yes, the programme may have some challenges, but to say that even the exceptional success of the students is fake is just amazing,” Mr Oppong Nkrumah noted.

Mr Mahama has always impugned the Free SHS programme and promised on several occasions, to review it should he return to office.
