The Concerned Citizens of Komenda Traditional Area have notified the Ghana Police Service of their intention to hold a demonstration on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
According to a statement released on August 5, the group expects around 2,000 participants from Komenda and nearby regions. The protest will begin at 6:00 a.m. in Komenda Township and proceed to Komenda Junction.
This demonstration is being organized in compliance with Section 1, Clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), which requires police notification at least five days before such events.
The protesters aim to oppose the government’s decision to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian firm.
They are calling for the lease to be reversed, advocating that the factory focus on processing locally grown sugarcane rather than importing raw sugar.
The group contends that the lease agreement was made without adequate procedural adherence and stakeholder consultation.
