The Kpasenkpe Sub- basin has been activated and a re- afforestation exercise is to take off as part of implementation of the integrated water resource management (IWRM) activities in the basin.

The activities are expected to focus on tree planting and protection around the Vea dam and river banks within the basin to ensure protection against encroachment.

Mr Aaron Aduna, Upper East Regional Coordinator of the White Volta Basin, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency indicated that major partners such as Tree Aid will spearhead the exercise under the Bleu Water Deal project when funding is secured.

He said though other interventions were in the pipeline, the emergence of Covid 19 and its effect on planned interventions in other selected sub basins had delayed.

He said the Water Resources Commission(WRC) was working in collaboration with the Dutch Water Authorities ,implementers of the Blue Deal Project, to support some long and short term interventions in the Kpasenkpe basin .
According to him, awareness creation and revival of Water Users Associations (WUA) for proper regulation of water use within the basin has also started.

The White Volta Basin Coordinator, said other sub basins would fall into place soon when funding is secured and noted that expected interventions in the middle white sub basin would improve water supply systems in the northern regions especially in Kumbungu and Tamale areas.

The sub basins and local government representation in the Gambaga Basin is presented by the Bawku West District Assembly, while the Kpasenkpe Basin is represented by the Talensi District assembly and include; Nasia Basin in the Mamprusi District.

Also the Nabogo Basin represented by the Gushiegu District, the Sissili Basin in the Builsa South District , Kulpawn in the Sissala West District, Mole Basin in West Gonga District , the Middle White in the Kumbungu district and lower white basin in Central Gonja District.

In the early part of 2010 the WRC and its partners; Dutch Water Authorities on the Blue Deal Project reviewed major interventions expected to take place in the various basins .

Notable among them are; the building of capacities of the WRC staff on water governance and specifically on water and food nexus, and water governance in the white Volta Basin among others to ensure improved IWRM.
