It appears former President John Agyekum Kufuor has had enough of his colleague ex-President, Jerry John Rawlings’ disregard for civility as he has finally concluded on withholding the respect he has for the founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Mr Kufuor, The aL-hAJJ has gathered, could not understand why longest served Head of State, Jerry Rawlings despises him even though he had continued to be nice to him and has forgiven him for all the “nasty” things he (Rawlings) said about him and his government.
The NDC founder has on countless occasions snubbed Mr Kufuor at public events though the latter was mostly seen trying to be “civil” with him. There have been media reports of feud between the two former Heads of State.
While many thought the two statesmen have buried the hatchet, Mr Rawlings at the swearing-in of Justice Sophia Akuffo as Chief Justice in Parliament last week demonstrated that the undeclared “war” between them was far from over.
A picture from the event captured Rawlings with frowned face gazing the floor even as his better half, Nana Konadu was heartily engaged in a chat with Mr Kufuor.
Mr Rawlings, who did not join the chat, folded his arms with his head bent down, signaling his revulsion for the former New Patriotic Party leader.
Incensed by Mr Rawlings’ behavior, sources close to Mr Kufuor told this paper that he (Kufuor) cannot continue to respect Mr Rawlings while the latter publicly treat him with disdain.
The feud between ex-Presidents Rawlings and Kufuor dates back to the time when he handed over power to the latter in 2001. The NDC founder has persistently and repetitively accused Mr Kufuor of being corrupt and even labeled him “Atta Ayi”, in reference to a notorious robber serving life imprisonment at Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
In one of his scathing attacks on Mr Kufuor, the former military strongman described him as “autocratic thief”
Recently, Mr Rawlings rated President Akufo-Addo ahead of Mr Kufuor, saying the former has more integrity than Kufuor, John Mahama and John Atta Mills put together.
On his part, Mr Kufuor has also described Rawlings as “Sasabonsam” (Devil), warning him not to greet him in public again.
He said Rawlings would act nice towards him when they meet, but would turn around to say nasty things about him as soon as they part ways.
Describing the former president as hypocritical, Mr Kufuour asked him to keep his fake gestures to himself.
