Award-winning African filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has embarked on location scouting in Ghana for the filming of the highly anticipated second season of the Netflix series Aníkúlápó.

Afolayan, known for his cinematic prowess across Africa, recently shared photos on Instagram from his scouting expedition in Ghana.

The filmmaker had previously announced plans to shoot portions of the series in Ghana during the Nigeria International Film and TV Summit (NIFS) held in Cannes, France, in June.

“Location scouting is a critical phase in our preparation for season 2 of Aníkúlápó,” Afolayan remarked, highlighting the importance of selecting filming sites that resonate with the series’ creative vision and logistical requirements.

The initiative to film in Ghana aligns with the country’s “Shoot in Ghana” campaign, spearheaded by the National Film Authority. The campaign aims to showcase Ghana’s cultural heritage and scenic landscapes while boosting local employment opportunities in the film industry.

Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, CEO of Ghana’s National Film Authority, expressed excitement about collaborating with Afolayan and emphasized Ghana’s appeal as a filming destination.

“Ghana invites filmmakers worldwide to capture our breathtaking scenery and state-of-the-art facilities in their productions,” Asante stated in an Instagram post.

‘Aníkúlápó ‘, a sequel to the 2022 Netflix original film, unfolds across four parts. It continues the narrative of Saro, a stranger and traditional textile weaver who finds himself intertwined in an unexpected romantic relationship with Queen Arolake upon arriving in Oyo. The second season promises to delve deeper into their complex relationship and the challenges they face in the new season.

The first season of Aníkúlápó, which was exclusively filmed at the Kunle Afolayan Production (KAP) Film Village in Igbojaye, Oyo State, was a resounding success. Involving a production crew of 600, the first season set a high standard for the series, making the anticipation for the second season even more exciting.
