The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) seems to share the concerns and frustrations of Ghanaians especially workers in these times of economic difficulties.
In a message of solidarity issued ahead of today?s workers? day (May day) celebration, the new General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyepong noted that ?the NPP acknowledges that the current economic hardships has worsened the plight of our workers and has adversely affected our nation?s development.?
This is part of reasons Propaganda Secretary for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region, Allotey Jacobs, is pushing for the removal of Seth Terpker from his position as Finance and Economic Planning Minister.
According to Allotey Jacobs who spoke on Peace FM?s Kokrokoo morning show, the Finance Minister has proven beyond doubt that despite his qualifications as a Chartered Accountant, he is incapable of steering the affairs of the Ministry assigned to him by President John Dramani Mahama.
?Ghanaians are suffering and he (Seth Terkper) must do something or the President must fire him,? he said while claiming ?he has become a Judas in the party (NDC). His policies will determine our (NDC) victory or failure in 2016. Seth Terkper is our problem now.?
Nonetheless, General Secretary of the opposition said ?the NPP urges workers from the various sectors of the economy, especially organised labour to remain steadfast in the collective interest of our dear nation Ghana.?
The party however expressed appreciation to all workers across the country.
?We pay tribute to the gallant work force on whose shoulders our great nation rests,? the statement noted.
Mr Agyepong recalled that ?during the NPP administration, various pragmatic policies geared towards making labour productive and comfortable, were pursued.?
Those policies, he said, sought the greater good of the ordinary worker whilst improving the living standards of the less privileged.?
As Ghana and the world marks May Day today, ?it is the hope of the New Patriotic Party that workers across the country will take stock of the past few years and work tirelessly towards achieving economic progress and strengthening our democracy,? the statement said.
For them, ?such a commitment from the nation?s workforce will build a prosperous Ghana.?
The party has therefore sent good wishes to all Ghanaian workers as they mark the occasion today, saying ?God bless our gallant workers; God bless our homeland Ghana.?
