Kwame Owusu Danso, Convener of the Forum for Accountable Governance, has formally petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate alleged corruption related to the 13th All African Games.
Danso’s petition calls for a thorough examination of the $245 million expenditure associated with the event, which occurred from March 4 to March 23, 2024.
Danso and his group have raised serious concerns about potential issues of transparency, accountability, and value for money, suggesting possible breaches in procurement processes, conflicts of interest, and other forms of corruption in allocating funds.
Following submitting the petition, Danso expressed confidence in the OSP’s ability to conduct a fair and exhaustive investigation.
“I have full confidence in the Office of the Special Prosecutor,” Danso stated.
“If the investigation confirms that there are no corruption-related issues with the organization of the All African Games, I will be satisfied, knowing I have done my duty for the good of this country.”
On August 19, during a Public Accounts Committee session, Prof. Amin Alhassan, Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), refuted claims made by the Sports Ministry that GBC received over $3 million for its coverage of the Games.
Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif stated that the broadcaster was paid more than $3 million in response to concerns about unpaid debts to technical staff.
Prof. Alhassan clarified that GBC received only $105,000, which was allocated to support the broadcaster’s decision to dedicate an entire channel to the African Games and suspend regular programming on GTV Sports Plus.
