Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah is determined to make history by guiding Sudan to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Appiah, who previously led Ghana to the 2014 World Cup, views this potential achievement as a groundbreaking moment for Sudanese football.
Currently, Sudan sits atop their World Cup qualifying group with 10 points from three wins and one draw, holding a two-point lead over second-placed Senegal.
In an interview with FIFA, Appiah highlighted the transformative impact World Cup qualification could have on Sudanese football, noting that it would not only simplify administrative processes but also elevate the sport’s profile in the country.
He pointed out that World Cup participation could inspire Sudanese players to seek opportunities in European leagues, thus broadening their career prospects.
“Reaching the World Cup would be a tremendous boost for the development of football in the country,” Appiah said.
“The joy and impact of such an achievement would be immense for Sudan.”
Appiah’s Sudanese team will also face Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, adding further intrigue to the upcoming fixtures.
