Lawmaker Alleges Politicians, Government Maltreat Bama IDPs

The House of Representatives member representing Bama, Ngala and Kala Balge federal constituency at the National Assembly Honourable Abdulrahman Terab has said that the unfortunate political dimensions in Borno state is attaining a very negative trend particularly his constituency which has been completely taken over by the BOKO haram insurgents resulting in the inhabitants taking refuge in various homes and IDPs camps in Maiduguri.


He said the situation can today be described as very difficult and challenging saying, ” it must be started in a categorical terms that our defection to PDP was necessitated and born out of public interest and personal conviction and now being used as an opportunity by some agents of APC led government in Borno state especially from Bama local government area to blackmail, intimidate, humiliate and fifteen traumatize those IDPs in my constituency who wish to exercise their democratic rights as citizens of this country “.
> Addressing a journalists at a press conference yesterday Sunday at Sun Citi Hotel Maiduguri ,Terab also alleged that the said IDPs are being maltreated in their various IDPs camps and violent youths were used to destroy their property, beat them up and even use live ammunition on them in order to threaten them to desist from supporting him and PDP as a party.
> “By Maltreating them in the camps where they reside and also resort to the use of violent thugs in destroying their properly, beating them on and even using live ammunition on them in order to threaten them to desist from supporting our humble selves and the PDP as a party”, Terab said.
He said “it is on record that the recent incident of such politics of bitterness was unleashed on our supporters when our campaign sites opposite the GGSS Yerwa was vandalized by unscrupulous elements purportedly wrong on the orders of the Executive Governor of Borno state, on his arrival from Abuja, to be precise on Tuesday, 11th February 2015. These thugs who also claimed they were sponsored by the authorities of the Bama local government area were in possession of Real Guns which they fired with the ammunition at our supporters who were around the vicinity and went ahead to destroy our posters and sign boards as well as causing injury to those who resisted the attacks “, Abdulrahman said.
He added that, “it is also on record that our supporters who are in the IDPs camps are horrendously and inhumanly maltreated by the operators of the camp only because they show their support to our humble selves and the PDP. We have recorded several cases of outright dismissal from camps, refusal to give food, water and medication even to the children of our supporters asking them to call us to cater for them”.
“This is rather despicable, inhuman, ungodly to say the least, where the government resources are used to cater for the IDPs are not from anybody’s pocket but from government resources which ch belong to the people. It is also sad to note that, the situation in the camps especially those in Bama are very poor especially as regards nutrition and Medicare while access to food and medical facilities at the camp. Worst of all, the operators have resolved to stop any kind of good gesture in the forms of food and sanitary items coming from our humble selves or the PDP as a party in order to succor to those in the camps. Some volunteer youths who help in the camps especially the NYSC were physically threatened by a senior member of the authorities to blackmail them and brand them as BOKO Haram supporters if they show their support to us. We have filed an official complaint to the DSS in this regard “, Terab added. The lawmaker further asserted that if the trend of political thuggery and intimidations is allowed to go unabated, the consequences leading to and on the days of the elections can be more than catastrophic and capable of further ruining the efforts of the delicate peace. He also called on his supporters to remain calm and steadfast with PDP while assuring that “we will do all that is in our powers to protect your rights and give you more qualitative representation.
