Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday discussed with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin the escalating Israel-Hamas violence and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza by phone.

During the conversation, Erdogan pointed at the “increasing brutality in the Palestinian territories and the rising civilian casualties,” while “expressing concern that the silence of Western nations was pushing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to an uncontrollable level,” according to a statement from his office.

Erdogan told Putin that Türkiye would continue to make every effort to ensure peace in the region, the statement added.

Both leaders have voiced concern over rising death toll among civilians and noted that targeting residential areas, religious and social facilities is unacceptable, reported Russia’s Sputnik news agency quoting a Kremlin statement.

They also stressed the two countries’ similar positions on the issue with a focus on the implementation of the two-state solution, the statement added.

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) launched a surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7, firing thousands of rockets and sending its forces into Israeli territory, to which Israel responded with massive airstrikes and punitive measures, including a siege on the enclave with supplies of water, electricity, fuel, and other necessities being cut off.

The conflict has so far killed more than 7,000 people on both sides.
