A writ has been issued in the Superior Court of Judicature, High Court of Justice, as a legal challenge mounts against Odaifio Welentsi III, the Nungua Mantse, concerning his eligibility to participate in the upcoming elections for the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

The plaintiffs, Nil Okpe, Dzaasetse of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area, and Nii Armaah Kwafio II, Acting President of the Ngleshie Alata Traditional Council, are seeking a court order to disqualify Welentsi from the elections which comes off tomorrow, Friday September 26, 2024.

They accuse him of attempting to manipulate the chieftaincy system in Accra by allegedly bribing traditional leaders to support the ascension of an unqualified candidate, Oblempong Wetse Kojo II.

In their statement of claim, the plaintiffs allege that Welentsi, who is also the chairman of the research committee of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, has been involved in the illegal endorsement of candidates, creating conflicts within various traditional councils in the region.

The plaintiffs have requested that the court restrain the defendants from declaring Welentsi as the president of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.

They argue that his actions threaten to exacerbate existing chieftaincy disputes in the Greater Accra Region.

Legal representatives for the plaintiffs have mandated the defendants to respond within eight days, warning that failure to appear could lead to a judgment in their absence.

The case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding chieftaincy matters in Ghana, which have historically been a source of conflict in many communities.

The hearing date has yet to be set, and all eyes will be on the court as this significant case unfolds in the coming weeks.

Both Defendants have duly been served.
