Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, has called for the preservation of the old Parliament House to serve as a historical heritage for the country.
He said the old Parliament House is an important edifice like the Christiansburg Castle, the Art Centre, Usher Fort, among other edifices in the city and it should be left untouched.
Nii Lantey Vanderpuye made the call when he addressed an “Accounting to the People Forum” in Accra held to create a forum for interaction with his constituents on issues affecting the development of the area.
He expressed unhappiness with the authorisation of the demolition of the old Parliament House saying they failed to consult or inform the chiefs, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the Member of Parliament for the area.
Nii Lantey Vanderpuye said the edifices in the region needed to be well protected and maintained for future generations to know their historical institutions while serving as a tourist attraction.
“When in other places historical edifices are being protected and preserved for future generations, we in Ghana are indiscriminately destroying ours and I urge that such practices must be put to an end,” he said.
On Monday it was reported in the media that the old Parliament House would be demolished to pave way for the construction of a GH¢15 million modern edifice.
