Liberia’s opposition Unity Party (UP) on Wednesday retracted an allegation by one of its officials who claimed that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had received a whopping sum of 150,000 U.S. dollars to compromise its neutral role in the country’s ongoing electoral process.

In a statement signed by Amos Tweh, the national secretary of the UP, the opposition group said it regretted the assertion made by Mohammed Ali, its campaign spokesperson, in a recent Facebook post.

“This assertion was at no time sanctioned by the Unity Party, our standard-bearer, or our campaign team. It should be noted that the UP does recognize and value the indispensable role ECOWAS has played in Liberia’s rebirth and renewal,” said the statement jointly made available Wednesday to Xinhua by the Liberian political party and the ECOWAS Commission.

The statement explained that in its consistency with the policy of strengthening Liberia’s participation in ECOWAS, the party aimed to reassure the country’s bilateral and multilateral partners of “its unflinching commitment to all protocols which Liberia has either acceded to, signed or ratified.”

Ahead of Liberia’s initial polls held on Oct. 10, the regional economic bloc said in a statement it had deployed a 95-member election observation mission, comprising 80 short-term and 15 long-term observers in accordance with the provisions of the Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance relating to the observation of elections and ECOWAS assistance.

The role of the mission is to monitor all pre-electoral, electoral, and post-electoral phases of the elections, “to ensure that the electoral process complies with international best practice,” the ECOWAS statement added.
