Libya has deported a group of migrants to Niger by land, marking the first such deportation in years, according to the Libyan Illegal Migration Control Department.

The department confirmed the deportation took place on Wednesday, with Niger’s charge d’affaires to Libya present at the event.

The migrants were sent back to Niger after being deemed to have violated Libyan laws, following the completion of necessary procedures. The department stated that deportations to countries of origin would continue as part of ongoing efforts to address irregular migration.

Libya has long been a key transit point for migrants, primarily from Africa, attempting to reach Europe by sea. This migration flow intensified after the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, which led to widespread instability and left Libya vulnerable to becoming a hub for migrants.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that there are currently 787,326 migrants in Libya, with 41% of them reporting having faced significant hardships—environmental, political, or economic—before arriving in the country.
