UN-led talks on naming a unified executive authority in Libya to help transition to possible elections next year were paused Sunday without appointing such an interim administration, said media reports.

“Ten years of conflict cannot be resolved in one week,” Stephanie Williams, head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, was quoted by media as saying at a news conference after the talks.

Delegates were scheduled to reconvene in about a week for a virtual meeting on the selection mechanism for the coming authority, Williams told reporters.

Days earlier at an inclusive intra-Libyan political dialogue forum, representatives across the Libyan social and political spectrum had agreed to hold national elections in December next year.

The forum was launched under the UN auspices shortly after the Libyan parties signed a UN-sponsored permanent ceasefire agreement in Geneva on October, 23 with an aim to discuss a political roadmap to end years-long conflicts and achieve lasting peace.
