The MAB International Hospital is to open a cancer research centre at Amasaman in the Ga West municipality of the Greater Accra Region to conduct trials aimed at creating immune-based treatments for the disease.
The hospital in collaboration with the Mampong Centre for Research into Plant Medicine, would also use herbal medicine for the treatment of diseases.
Mr Daniel Akrong, Chief Internal Auditor of the hospital, disclosed this at the end of a month-long free dental screening by the hospital at Nyamekye in Accra on Wednesday.
He said it was the policy of the hospital to support the community in which it operated hence the free dental screening.
Mr Akrong said for half a century, the hospital has provided world-class medical care to residents of Ghana and beyond.
“We seek to improve the health status of those we serve with a commitment not compassion, love, care and to excellence in all we do,” Mr Akrong said.
The Chief Internal Auditor said the mission of the hospital was achieved through the combined efforts of the healthcare team and community partnerships.
“We invite to find out for yourself why MAB remains a standard for healthcare in Ghana and in West Africa,” he said.
Mr Akrong said most of the people who were screed came with cases of cavities, fractured teeth and retained roots.
He said others came with lose teeth or missing teeth, adding that close to 1,000 residents were screened.
Mr Akrong said for instance many Ghanaians were unaware that they need not discard their toothbrushes after recovering from infections like catarrh, but it is recommended to do.
“You should throw your toothbrush away after recovering from cold otherwise there is the tendency of reinfecting yourself with the cold,” he said.
Mr Akrong recommended the use of softer toothbrushes with smaller heads rather than hard brushes with big heads, adding that using hard brushes and applying a lot of strength when brushing your teeth will not necessarily make them clean.
“That would rather destroy your gum and cause bleeding and a whole lot of other problems’, he added.
