Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to religious leaders to intensify prayers as the country grapples with economic challenges, urging for divine intervention ahead of the upcoming elections.

He was speaking at the episcopal ordination and installation of Most Rev.

Fransisca Bomansaan, the Catholic Bishop of Wa, Mahama, underscored Ghana’s stability amidst regional turbulence, which includes political unrest in neighbouring countries and the global economic downturn, attributing Ghana’s relative peace to divine mercy.

He emphasized the pivotal role of religious bodies in sustaining Ghana’s status as a peaceful nation and urged them to continue as moral beacons in society.

Mahama, also the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), pledged his party’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process in 2024, urging President Nana Akufo-Addo and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to join efforts for national harmony. This commitment aims to reassure the public and foster a sense of security.

In response, Stephen Yakubu, representing President Akufo-Addo at the event, encouraged Ghanaians to embrace tolerance and reject violence as the nation prepares for the polls.

He assured the government of its unwavering support for the church’s crucial mission of fostering peace, justice, and citizen welfare. This emphasis on the church’s role aims to make the audience feel supported and hopeful.

Most Rev. Fr. Bomansaan, appointed by Pope Francis following the passing of Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr, M.Afr, is the 5th Bishop of the Wa Diocese. He brings extensive experience in the Catholic Church to his new role and is expected to play a key role in fostering unity and leading the call for prayer in the nation.

Ghana, known for its relative stability in West Africa, faces economic challenges exacerbated by global economic downturns and internal pressures. This has prompted calls from leaders across the spectrum for unity and prayer.
