John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of resisting a potential transfer of power should Mahama win the 2024 general elections.
In a Facebook post, Mahama suggested that Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to hand over power stems from concerns about being held accountable for alleged corruption and mismanagement.
Mahama asserted, “Do you know why President Akufo-Addo is fighting against handing over to me? John Mahama will not protect his legacy of mismanagement, corruption, state capture, and inflicting hardship and poverty on Ghanaians.”
President Akufo-Addo has previously expressed his position, arguing that he could not transfer power to someone he has defeated twice in elections.
In a recent rally in Doboro, Greater Accra, after visiting Blue Skies Limited, Akufo-Addo reiterated his stance. “The registration has started; I urge all persons yet to register to do so; your vote is your power,” he said.
He added, “I can’t hand over to someone I defeated twice and who is unsatisfied with my efforts. He will destroy the work I have done.
Vote for Dr Bawumia; I have worked with him for the past seven and a half years and am confident he can continue the excellent work.”
The exchange highlights the growing tensions and criticisms as Ghana approaches its next general elections, with both candidates making their cases to the electorate.
