John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has explained why he chose to run for president again in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Speaking at a mini rally in Kissiman within the Okaikoi North constituency on September 15, Mahama reflected on his decision to re-enter the political arena after handing over power to President Akufo-Addo in 2016.

Mahama expressed that, initially, he had hoped to retire and become a statesman.

However, he felt compelled to contest again due to what he perceived as significant economic damage under the Akufo-Addo administration.

He emphasized that his extensive experience, knowledge, and integrity are essential for addressing Ghana’s current economic challenges.

“I was looking forward to retiring after I handed over to Akufo Addo and becoming a statesman.

But I would be selfish if I saw the extent to which they have destroyed this country and did not offer my experience to turn things around for my children, Sharaf, Shahid, or Farida, and the youth of this country,” Mahama stated. “We will work together with you to turn things around.”

Mahama also swiped at Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who recently touted his achievements as vice president and suggested he should be promoted to president.

Mahama dismissed Bawumia’s claims, asserting that his administration failed to manage the economy.

“Recently, I heard the flagbearer of the NPP, the vice president, saying that he has performed excellently as vice president, so they should promote him to president.

I don’t know who marked his script or whether he marked it himself, but I can tell him that when it comes to his performance, the mark that the people of Ghana will give him for managing the economy is F, fail,” Mahama said.

“The mark that the people of Ghana will give him for management of the economy is F. F means fail.

They failed in the economy, and they cannot escape blame for where they have landed us.”

Mahama urged Ghanaians to vote for him and the NDC in the 2024 elections, promising to leverage his experience to rectify the economic issues he believes have worsened under the current administration.
