Suppose John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is elected president.
In that case, he has pledged to create the Ghana Medical Care Trust to provide essential support for individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as kidney failure, diabetes, cancer, sickle cell disease, and hypertension.
Mahama committed during the NDC’s manifesto launch on Saturday, August 24, in Winneba, located in the Central Region. He emphasized the need for dedicated healthcare support for those with long-term medical conditions.
“I will establish the Ghana Medical Care Trust to support persons with chronic diseases,” Mahama declared, stressing the importance of addressing the needs of patients with severe health issues.
In addition to the trust, Mahama proposed launching a community pharmacy initiative to encourage regular health check-ups and the early detection of conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
“I will also introduce the community pharmacy concept, encouraging people to visit local pharmacies for blood pressure and sugar level checks. Early detection is critical to effective treatment and survival,” he noted.
Mahama also promised to implement free primary healthcare services, stating that individuals visiting CHPS compounds or health centres would receive free treatment, irrespective of their National Health Insurance status.
“So if you go to a CHPS compound or health centre, whether you have national health insurance or not, you will be treated for free,” Mahama affirmed.
For services at district referral hospitals and higher levels of care, Mahama assured that treatment would be covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme, offering a comprehensive healthcare approach across various system levels.
