John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has highlighted the historic potential of Ghana’s upcoming 2024 elections, emphasizing the chance to elect the country’s first female Vice President.

In a speech during a mini-campaign event at Tongo in the Talensi constituency, Mahama urged voters to view the election not only as an opportunity to remove what he described as a “nepotistic and corrupt” Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration but also as a landmark moment in Ghanaian political history, a moment that demands our immediate action.

Mahama pointed out that while Ghana has appointed women to significant positions such as Chief Justice, Speaker of Parliament, and Attorney General, the country has yet to elect a female President or Vice President.

He stressed the importance of women’s participation in politics and leadership roles, highlighting the unique perspectives and skills they bring to the table.

“We have appointed women to top roles in public service, but none have reached the office of President or Vice President,” he said. “It is time for change, and I believe the opportunity to make history is now.”

The NDC leader strongly supported Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the party’s vice-presidential candidate.

“Naana Jane is an accomplished woman with an unblemished record,” Mahama said, praising her unique qualifications, including being the first female Vice Chancellor of a public university and her tenure as Minister for Education, instilling confidence in her ability to lead.

Mahama urged Ghanaians, particularly women, to support the NDC and Agyemang in what he described as a chance to make history and bring competent leadership to the Vice Presidency, a need that cannot be overstated in our current political climate.
