Mahama Tia Abdul Kabiru, the technical advisor to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced his intention to run in the Walewale Constituency New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries rerun following a recent ruling by the Tamale High Court.

Kabiru initially won the primaries held on January 27, 2024, securing 345 votes against incumbent MP Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuwera, who received 338 votes.

However, on January 29, 2024, Hajia Lariba subsequently filed an ex-parte motion seeking an injunction to prevent Kabiru from being declared the parliamentary candidate.

On September 2, 2024, the Tamale High Court, under the direction of Justice Richard Kogyapwah, ordered a rerun of the primaries.

The court is expected to provide detailed reasons for its decision on September 12, 2024.

In response to the court’s decision, Kabiru has reaffirmed his commitment to contest the rerun.

He has called on the NPP National Executive Council (NEC) to ensure the voters’ register is thoroughly cleaned before the election.

He emphasized the need for a transparent process to avoid potential legal disputes from disgruntled candidates.

Speaking to Asaase News after a meeting with his supporters, Kabiru said, “This meeting was with the youth, women, and delegates of the Walewale Constituency.

The consensus is clear: they believe I am the duly elected candidate and want to reaffirm that on September 8.”

Kabiru stated, “My supporters have encouraged me to pick up the nomination form and contest the elections again.

I urge the NEC to ensure a clean register to prevent post-election legal challenges.”

He emphasized his commitment to securing the Walewale seat for the NPP and ensuring the constituency’s importance in Ghanaian politics.

“Under no circumstances will I do anything to jeopardize the future and relevance of Walewale in our political landscape,” Kabiru declared.

Meanwhile, Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuwera has confirmed her intention to run for the position in the rerun. The primaries are scheduled for September 8, 2024.
