Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has outlined his vision for transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector during his #Mahama4Change2024 tour of the Upper East Region.

In a recent address, Mahama detailed a series of proposed policies designed to bolster the agricultural sector and enhance food security nationwide. His plan includes the establishment of special agro-industrial zones across all sixteen regions.

These zones will focus on adding value to local crops where Ghana has a comparative advantage, aiming to boost exports and reduce reliance on raw material imports.

“By creating these zones, we will strengthen our economy and create opportunities for local farmers,” Mahama said. “This initiative will enhance our export capabilities and decrease our dependency on imported raw materials.”

Additionally, Mahama proposed the creation of nationwide farmer service centres. These centres will provide farmers access to advanced technology, essential equipment, and other resources to improve food security and stimulate economic growth.

The initiative is expected to promote modern farming techniques and the formation of robust farmer cooperatives.

“We aim to empower our agricultural community through innovation and advanced tools,” Mahama explained. “Our goal is to inspire a culture of success and make significant strides in agricultural development.”

Mahama also announced a new program inspired by the “1970s Operation Feed Yourself and Industries” initiative.

This program is designed to make Ghana self-sufficient in basic staples, reduce unnecessary imports, and ensure that Ghanaians have access to affordable, nutritious food.

“As I have shared with community leaders and citizens during my tour, Naana Jane and I are committed to leading a government that will work closely with the people to build a prosperous and food-secure future for Ghana,” Mahama said.

He concluded by urging voters to support him in the upcoming election, emphasizing his commitment to advancing Ghana’s agricultural sector to benefit farmers and consumers.

“Vote for John Mahama on December 7 to help build a thriving agricultural sector,” he added. “Let’s build Ghana together.”
