John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reaffirmed his commitment to overhauling the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, addressing concerns and pledging improvements during the campaign launch in Tamale.
Mahama highlighted his plan to revamp the government’s free education initiative if elected in the 2024 general elections. He specifically targets eliminating the double-track system, which was introduced to manage overcrowding in schools but has been criticized for disrupting student learning schedules.
“We’re going to improve the Free SHS. We’re going to work hard to remove the obnoxious double-track system so that all our children can go to school at the same time and close simultaneously,” Mahama declared, emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted education for Ghanaian students.
He further expressed concern over extended breaks between school terms under the current system and pledged to create a more stable educational calendar where students can consistently attend school without prolonged interruptions.
Mahama’s promise comes amidst ongoing discussions about the effectiveness and sustainability of the Free SHS policy, signalling a potential shift in approach should the NDC come to power.
