John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to maintain a 48-hour vigilance period until the Electoral Commission (EC) counts all ballots in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Speaking passionately at the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, Mahama called upon party members and supporters to stand steadfast in protecting ballot boxes and ensuring transparency throughout the electoral process.

Mahama stressed the importance of vigilance, asserting that every election phase must be closely monitored to prevent any potential manipulation that could favour the New Patriotic Party (NPP). His directive to party members was unequivocal: “Everybody needs to prepare; we’re not going to sleep for 48 hours until all the ballots have been counted. None of us will sleep for 48 hours until all the ballots have been counted.”

Addressing supporters who plan to vote for the NDC, Mahama reassured them of the party’s commitment to safeguarding every vote cast. Despite previous disputes with the Electoral Commission, Mahama expressed readiness to extend trust, stating, “We have had our issues with the Electoral Commission, but we’re prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.”

Mahama’s declaration underscores the NDC’s determination to ensure electoral integrity and fairness, signalling their readiness to endure a period of heightened vigilance to safeguard the democratic process and uphold the will of the Ghanaian electorate in the upcoming elections.
