A large portion of a main road that connects the eastern part of Zambia to the rest of the country has been washed away due to heavy rains, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded, the Road Development Agency (RDA), a government agency responsible for road maintenance said on Monday.
Authorities have since stopped heavy goods vehicles from using the road but instead park their vehicles until the road has been worked on.
Masuzyo Ndhlovu, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs said the situation was unfortunate as the road does not only cater for locals but was vital in international traffic to Mozambique and Malawi.
“The area is being barricaded and the police service is on hand to regulate the flow of traffic where only light trucks are being allowed to cross the affected area,” he said in a release.
Zambia has experienced heavy rains during the 2019/2020 rainy season, resulting in various infrastructures being damaged while people have been displaced after their houses were submerged in water. Enditem
