Following Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s adjournment of Parliament, the Majority Caucus, in recognition of its pivotal role, has urgently requested an extraordinary session to deliberate on critical government matters.
Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, invoked Article 112(3) of Ghana’s Constitution and Standing Order 53 to petition Speaker Bagbin for the session formally.
“By Article 112(3) of the Constitution and Standing Order 53 of Parliament, we formally request an Extraordinary Session of Parliament at this moment,” stated Afenyo-Markin in his letter to the Speaker.
The agenda proposed by the Majority Caucus includes crucial issues such as the Ghana Energy Sector Recovery Programme’s financing agreement with the International Development Association, tax exemptions under the One District, One Factory Programme, and several legislative bills. These are not just routine matters but issues of significant national importance.
Highlighting the pressing urgency of these matters, Afenyo-Markin emphasized Parliament’s constitutional duty to convene promptly for the benefit of the Ghanaian people. These issues cannot wait and require immediate attention.
“We stand ready to provide any additional information or clarification that may be required and look forward to your favourable consideration of this request,” he concluded.
If summoned, the extraordinary session would mark a critical juncture in Ghana’s legislative efforts to address pressing national priorities.
