The Majority in Ghana’s Parliament is urging Speaker Alban Bagbin to utilize a specially constructed dome at the car park for parliamentary sessions scheduled for September 3, 2024.
This recommendation comes amid concerns about ongoing renovations in the parliamentary chamber, which might affect availability.
The call for an alternative venue follows a recent decision by the Speaker to adjourn parliamentary sittings indefinitely on July 30, 2024, a move that prompted a recall of Members of Parliament from recess.
The recall was initiated by a petition from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who cited dissatisfaction with the indefinite adjournment.
Speaker Bagbin has indicated that an alternative venue will be provided, but the chamber is potentially unusable due to renovation works.
Second Deputy Majority Whip Alex Tetteh Djournobuah has proposed using the dome, which was previously used during the COVID-19 pandemic, for parliamentary activities.
Djournobuah emphasized that the dome could serve as a functional temporary space for parliamentary proceedings if the chamber remains unavailable.
He noted that the use of the dome during the pandemic demonstrated its suitability for parliamentary business, and it remains a viable option for the upcoming sessions.
