The Malawi government is pleased with how China is committing itself in supporting the country to be a hunger free country, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Development Kondwani Nankhumwa has said.

The minister made the remarks during a handover ceremony of a solar-powered irrigation and maize milling facility at Mikolongwe farm in Chiradzuru on Monday.

The minister said he was pleased to commission the irrigation and milling plant because it will help in reducing some of the food challenges due to climate change in the district.

He said, solar energy is such a climate-smart technology which will help tackle the climate change challenges and allow smallholder farmers to achieve sustainable food, nutrition and income security.

The minister also advised the local authority of the area to work hand in hand with the government official at the farm to ensure that the facility is safe for years,

In his remarks during the ceremony, Li JianJun from Hebei Pingle flour machinery group said that he was excited the company has managed to construct the irrigation scheme in the area.

He promised the company would build similar plants in other districts across the country.

The facility will also assist farmers in food production and help farmers access animal feed. Enditem
