Leader of the main opposition political party in Malawi, Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Lazarus Chakwera, says he is ready to meet President Peter Mutharika on the post-election scuffle rocking the country.
Chakwera has told local Journalists in Lilongwe on Wednesday after meeting with the country’s mediation body, Public Affairs Committee (PAC).
PAC, a group of religious bodies, had met President Peter Mutharika Monday on the same issue and the mediating body’s meeting with the opposition on Wednesday was to share the outcome of the Monday meeting with the president.
Chakwera said PAC wanted to know if the opposition leader was ready to meet Mutharika face to face over the impasse. “I said why not? Malawians need to be able to talk face to face over issues affecting all of us,” said Chakwera.
After the PAC meeting with President Mutharika in Lilongwe on Monday, the president’s press secretary, Mgeme Kalilani, said in a statement that Mutharika was also willing to meet all stakeholders in the interest of peace in the country.
One of the members of PAC, Gilford Matonga, told the local media that the mediating group would not relent in pushing for dialogue amongst stakeholders so that they should resolve the issues amicably. Enditem
