A man has been taken into police custody for questioning over suspected theft of a laptop computer at the University of Ghana Hospital, Legon.

Gideon Obasi Kalu was said to have joined patients, who had queued to have their medical records captured on the hospital’s computer and reportedly waited till the nurse had left her table to pick something from one of the offices before striking.

He was said to have disconnected the electrical cables, removed the laptop computer and as he tried to hide it in his bag, was caught by an alert technician.

An alarm was raised and he was seized and handed over together with the computer to the Legon police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kofi Anokye, the District Commander, confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

The suspect is expected to be put before court on Tuesday, March 27, to answer a charge of stealing

Kalu, a Nigerian, had entered the country in 2015 without a resident or working permit.

The Administrator of the Hospital, Mr. Eric Gaizie, told the GNA that three laptop computers had been stolen from the facility.

Security measures would be strengthened to prevent any such occurrence, going forward.
