Manchester City secured their seventh Community Shield with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.
The match, which ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, was decided by a high-stakes shootout.
The Community Shield concluded in a draw for the second consecutive year, leading to penalties.
Last year, Arsenal emerged victorious in a similar scenario, but Manchester City turned the tables this time.
The first half of the match was marked by tactical discipline, with both teams probing but failing to score.
Manchester City enjoyed greater possession, yet Manchester United’s defence, marshalled by Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans, held firm against City’s attacking efforts.
The breakthrough came in the 82nd minute when Alejandro Garnacho, who had been influential since his introduction in the 61st minute, scored for Manchester United.
Garnacho received a precise pass on the right flank, cut inside, and finished low past City goalkeeper Ederson to give United a 1-0 lead.
City responded with determination and equalized in the 89th minute.
Oscar Bobb made a dynamic run down the right wing. He delivered a perfect cross for Bernardo Silva, who outmuscled Facundo Pellistri to head in the equalizer, sending the match to a penalty shootout.
The shootout was tense, with both sides demonstrating composure under pressure. Silva missed City’s opening penalty, while Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans failed to convert for United.
Swiss defender Manuel Akanji emerged as the shootout hero, scoring the decisive spot-kick after both teams had traded successful penalties, securing a 7-6 win for Manchester City.
This triumph adds to Manchester City’s Community Shield victories, previously won in 1937, 1968, 1972, 2012, 2018, and 2019. The win further cements City’s position as a dominant force in English football.
