Manchester City have re-signed Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona on an initial one-year contract with an option for an additional year.
The 33-year-old midfielder returns to the Etihad Stadium after a single season in Spain.
Gundogan previously enjoyed a highly successful tenure at Manchester City, winning 14 titles and scoring 60 goals in 304 appearances.
Reflecting on his time with the club, he described his seven years at Manchester City as “pure contentment”. He expressed his eagerness to wear the City shirt again, highlighting his immense respect for manager Pep Guardiola.
The decision to leave Barcelona was influenced by the club’s financial constraints and their need to register a new signing, Dani Olmo.
This move aids Barcelona in meeting La Liga’s spending restrictions. Despite his impressive debut season at Barcelona, Gundogan departs with gratitude for his time at the club.
Gundogan, who retired from international football following Euro 2024, initially joined Manchester City in 2016 as Pep Guardiola’s first signing.
