THE ASANTEHENE Otumfuo Osei Tutu II sat in state yesterday at a grand durbar of chiefs and people of Asanteman at the Manhyia Palace, to mark the first Akwasidae festival of the year.

The Akwasidae festival is celebrated on the first Sunday after every 40 days on the Asante calendar for people from walks of life to have the rare opportunity of paying homage to the Asante Monarch.

The Akwasidae festival which is celebrated across the Asante Kingdom is one of the adored festivals for the Asantes.

But Sunday?s Akwasidae festival which was the first Akwasidae festival for the Asantes in the New Year was marked in a grand and colourful manner.

The traditional event which was massively attended by scores of people from all walks of life, was used to display the rich Asante culture, which dates back to several centuries.

Top-notch people in society like Central Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong, Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Yaw Adusei, Kojo Bonsu, Kumasi Mayor and Collins Dauda, Minister for Water Resources Works and Housing were there to grace the occasion.

The Asantehene was surrounded by the palace guards and his elders, waving to the crowd before he took his seat for the function to start.

Some selected dignitaries and the Asante chiefs present, one-after-the-other, went to pay homage and also wish Otumfuo well, amid the playing of traditional tunes in the background.

As usually done, most of the people present at the event presented drinks and other gifts to the occupant of the Golden Stool which was announced to the hearing of the large gathering.

Otumfuo together with his elders finally marched through the durbar grounds amid the beating of traditional drums as the King shook hands with some selected people to bring the event to a close.
