On Friday, August 2, 2024, an unexpected turn of events unfolded in Winneba as market women showed strong support for Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, over National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang during her visit to the Effutu Municipal capital.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang and her team visited Winneba to discuss the NDC’s agenda with market women.

However, their reception quickly turned sour when Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, slated to tour the market, arrived.

Witnesses described a swift shift in allegiance as the market women, including staunch NDC supporters adorned in party colours, abandoned Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang’s gathering to flock towards Afenyo-Markin.

The market echoed with chants and accolades for their MP, such as “Show Boy! Alex Show Boy! Do the Do! Do the Do!”

The scene grew increasingly embarrassing for the NDC team, prompting them to cut short their visit and depart Winneba to avoid further humiliation.

Reflecting on the incident, a member of Afenyo-Markin’s campaign team remarked, “What transpired in the main market of Winneba sends a clear message to the opposition NDC that Effutu is firmly in Afenyo-Markin’s grasp, thanks to his dedication to the constituency.”

Known for his regular interactions with market women during market days, Afenyo-Markin’s popularity among Winneba residents was evident as even diehard NDC supporters rallied behind him during the encounter with Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang.

The incident is a significant indicator of Effutu’s political landscape as the country heads towards the general elections, underlining Afenyo-Markin’s strong influence and support base among the local populace.
