Mexico’s production and export of cars reached a record high in February, rising 11.1 percent and 9.7 percent respectively year-on-year, the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) reported on Monday.

State CarsAMIA data shows that in February, the country produced a total of 301,475 light vehicles and exported 240,909 of them.

In the first two months of this year combined, Mexico produced 580,017 cars and exported a total of 452,591, up 7.7 percent and 4.5 percent respectively from the figures registered in the same period of 2016.

The U.S. market remained as the absolute top destination, receiving 75.6 percent of exported Mexican vehicles, although it saw a drop in its domestic sales, AMIA said.

“In a country (the United States) where sales are dropping, we are growing and we have taken our market share to 13.9 percent. This is a participation we have never had,” said Eduardo Solis, the president of AMIA, at a press conference on Monday. Enditem
