Multiple military airstrikes in Nigeria’s northwest region killed scores of gunmen and destroyed their camps, said the Nigerian defense headquarters on Wednesday.
Ten camps of the gunmen, believed by the military authorities to be bandits, were destroyed across the two states of Katsina and Zamfara in the northwestern part of the country from June 20, said an official statement reaching Xinhua in Abuja. The operation was aimed at taking out identified gunmen’s locations based on credible intelligence.
It is one of the multiple military operations in Nigeria’s northwest region which has been wrecked by years of violence.”Some of the significant airstrikes include those executed at Dutsen Asolo and Birnin Kogo areas of Katsina State as well as at Dogo Gede’s Camp in the Kwayanbana Forest area of Zamfara state,” the statement said.
It said some surviving gunmen, who were tracked escaping from the cave area, were taken out in follow-on strikes.
Banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities have recently become rampant in the northwest region. The military high command said they are in control of the situation with ongoing multiple operations against the gunmen.
