International mining firm Newmont Gold Corporation has offered 100,000 U.S. dollars to help Ghana fight the COVID-19 outbreak, a press release has said.

The contribution will go directly into the purchase of testing kits for the two testing centers in Accra and Kumasi, as well as preventive measures in and around the company’s mining sites in the Ahafo and Akyem communities.

“We recognize the need to strengthen the capabilities of our public institutions, so they can undertake mass testing and other public health measures to minimize the risks and impacts associated with COVID-19,” said Francois Hardy, regional senior vice president of Newmont Africa.

Hardy said his firm is also taking proactive measures to protect its workforce and nearby communities.

Newmont is one of the largest gold mining firms in Ghana. Enditem
