The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has affirmed that the government is committed to preventing Achimota Forest from becoming a hotspot for criminal activities.

Speaking before Parliament’s Assurance Committee, Minister Jinapor underscored the proactive measures implemented by the Forestry Commission, including increased patrols by Forest Guards to deter criminals, thereby enhancing the public’s sense of security.

The Minister’s statement follows concerns MP Theresa Lady Awuni raised in August 2021 regarding security around Achimota Forest.

He mentioned logistical support provided to Achimota Police Station to enhance security efforts.

Moreover, Minister Jinapor reiterated the Ministry’s strategy of aggressive afforestation, protection, and reforestation, citing the success of initiatives like Green Ghana Day in increasing tree cover and reducing deforestation rates, instilling hope for the future of Achimota Forest.

However, Committee Chairman Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed reservations, noting discrepancies between the Minister’s claims and the actual situation during his visit to Achimota Police Station.

The government remains resolute in safeguarding Achimota Forest against environmental degradation and criminal activities, underscoring its commitment to forest conservation and community security.
