Hawa Koomson, Ghana’s Minister for Fisheries and Aqua Culture, has cautioned fishermen against illegal fishing activities as the annual fishing closed season commences across the country.

Speaking at a ceremony in Dixcove, Western Region, Minister Koomson emphasized the severe penalties that await those who violate the fishing ban aimed at replenishing Ghana’s marine fisheries resources.

The closed season, now a customary practice in Ghana’s fishing industry, is slated to last for one month. The government has pledged rigorous enforcement to safeguard the sustainability of marine life.

Minister Koomson issued a specific warning regarding attempts to bypass the ban by landing fish at the Togo border, promising apprehension and legal consequences for offenders. Additionally, she emphasized the prohibition of monofilament nets and unauthorized fishing gear once the season commences.

However, concerns have surfaced among fishermen in Dixcove regarding insufficient support from the government ahead of the closed season, particularly in the form of premix fuel and financial aid. This lack of preparation has left many worried about their ability to sustain themselves and their families during the ban period.

Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, Western Regional Minister, underscored Dixcove’s pivotal role in Ghana’s fishing industry, contributing significantly to the nation’s Tuna output.

Stephen Adjo Katcher, President of the Ghana Industrial Trawlers Association, welcomed the closed season initiative but highlighted challenges such as exorbitant costs for fishing gear spare parts and fuel.

The ongoing dialogue between government officials and fishermen reflects the delicate balance between conservation efforts and the livelihoods dependent on Ghana’s fisheries sector.
