The Ministry of Health has requested a six-month extension to recover approximately GH¢100,000 in unpaid rent from 19 employees who defaulted in 2022.
These employees were allocated official accommodations at Korle Bu and Asylum Down Flats but failed to meet their rental obligations.
Emma Ofori Agyemang, Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation at the Ministry, explained to a parliamentary committee that delays in recovering the funds were due to procedural issues at the Ministry of Finance. She noted that only GH¢11,000 has been recovered to date.
Agyemang assured the committee that a new system had been implemented to deduct rent directly from employees’ salaries moving forward. She presented a draft payment plan to settle the outstanding balance within the requested six-month period.
“We have implemented a system where rent is deducted from salaries. With our draft payment plan, we aim to recover the remaining balance beyond the GH¢11,000 already settled,” Agyemang stated.
She emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to resolving the issue promptly, stating, “Honourable, please, it won’t go more than six months.”
The request underscores ongoing efforts by the Ministry to address financial irregularities and ensure accountability in its operations.
